In 2008, Coca‑Cola Hellenic in Russia and the UNESCO office in Moscow initiated Volga Day on May 20th as annual event on the international environment calendar in order to coordinate the efforts on protecting the biodiversity of the Volga and to involve local communities.
The first Volga Day was celebrated in Nizhny Novgorod in 2008 and that same year events took place in several cities along the Volga River. The organizers say that the festival will expand to more regions in the coming years.
From May 17 to 28, 2010 the Volga Days celebration and various educational initiatives took place in Astrakhan, Saratov, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Yaroslavl and cities in the Yaroslavl region, Kazan and the Republic of Tatarstan. Traditionally, Volga Day included the scientific seminars, conferences, round tables, riverside clean-ups, contests and quizzes for students and youth.
